Calvary Choir, 2009
CLASSICAL ANGLICAN MUSIC IN SANTA CRUZ
Under the leadership of Music Director Murray Walker, Calvary's outstanding traditional Anglican choir leads the congregation in song every Sunday at the 10:30 a.m. service, September through June. Membership in the choir is open to any Calvary parishioner who wishes to join. Non-parishioners may join by audition. The choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. (between the two regular Sunday services).
The musical tradition at Calvary is rich and varied. In addition to hymns and mass settings from the Episcopal Hymnal 1982, on any given Sunday one might also expect to hear plainchant, Anglican chant, and/or Taize chant. Choral anthems during the Offertory (and occasionally during Communion) are drawn from the entire breadth of classical ecclesiastical choral music, from the Renaissance through the 21st Century.
LISTEN TO CALVARY'S CHOIR
While the sound files generally work very well, there are circumstances beyond our control that may affect your ability to hear them, including site traffic, internet routing issues, and your own browser and firewall settings. If you experience "partial download" (i.e., you don't hear the entire song), the problem is likely site traffic or routing issues, and can be solved by trying again later. If you can't play the files at all, however, the problem is more likely to be with your settings, and you may want to contact your ISP for more information.
The Lord is my shepherd: Hylton-Stewart. This beautiful setting of the beloved 23rd Psalm is an example of Anglican Chant: a style unique to churches of the Anglican Communion.
This is the day which the Lord hath made: Anonymous A beautiful example of 16th century English polyphony.
Christus Factus Est : Bruckner"Christ was made obedient for us, even unto death on a cross."
Grace to you and peace: Lange A beautiful 21st century composition by American composer Kinley Lange. Featuring tenor soloist and choral scholar Tyler Johnson.
With the exception of "Grace to you and peace," which was recorded at Calvary, the samples above were recorded in the chapel at York School, Monterey, CA. Many thanks to York for the use of its fine facilities. Files hosted by www.fileden.com

The musical program at Calvary is enhanced by the Choral Scholarship program, which provides four students from area colleges (one for each section) with a stipend for singing with the choir. The students benefit from the experience, and the choir and congregation benefit from the students' knowledge and musical ability. In May, the choir hosts a gala event called "GinSing!" to help finance the Choral Scholarship program
In addition to the regular Sunday services, the choir also leads choral Evensong several times during the year. Other choral services include Lessons and Carols in the week leading up to Christmas, Christmas Eve Mass, Maundy Thursday, and the Great Vigil of Easter. Two or three times a year, the choir offers a special Choral Eucharist, featuring full, cathedral-style Mass settings. The choir also occasionally joins with other choirs in the Santa Cruz area to provide special choral services at Calvary and at other churches (for example, in 2005 they joined several Episcopal choirs in the San Jose/East Bay area in singing Fauré's Requiem at Trinity Cathedral in San Jose).
We hope you'll visit us sometime soon and hear just how beautiful worship can be when voices are lifted together in song! Come participate in what some people travel all the way to England to experience...the majesty and mystery of the Anglican Choral Tradition!
