A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of
the Lord will rest on him – the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. (Isaiah 11:1-4)
The tradition of the Jesse Tree comes to us from Europe. It is named for Jesse, the father of King David. God promised David that his Kingdom would last forever – and that through him and his seed God would save his people and bless the world. The “tree” is usually a branch or sapling. Our Jesse Tree at Calvary is at the entrance of the church.
The ornaments were made by our Sunday school children. Attached to each ornament is a Christmas wish from a local child living in foster care. Parishioners select an ornament and purchase the gift. The wrapped gift is returned to church with the ornament attached. The gifts are delivered to the children by Christmas.
If you are unable to buy a gift but would like to contribute toward a gift, I can shop on your behalf. You can put a check in the offering with the designation “Jesse Tree” in the memo line. Please return wrapped gifts or checks to church by December 17th.
Thank you,
Jane Prough |
