Calvary Choir Recordings

Ego Dilecto, Ivan Moody (Calvary Choir, 07 May 2023)

Spring Bursts Today, Robert J. Powell (Calvary Choir, 30 April 2023)

Prayer for Ukraine, John Rutter 2022 (Calvary Choir, 3 April 2022)

In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, composer John Rutter asked himself how a composer would respond to a global tragedy. He said, “Well, I suppose one would write music.” The composer made this piece available to all choirs at no fee but asked that a donation be made to a relief fund of their choice. Calvary took up a special collection which went to Doctors Without Borders.

This is our Service of Christmas Lessons and Carols–the first in-person, live musical performance by our choir since March of 2020! Welcome back, choir!

Our anthem for the Second Sunday of Easter, 11 April 2021, was an earlier Calvary Choir recording of Randall Thompson’s Alleluia with a video collage created by Alex Johnson of Calvary’s stained glass windows photographed by Allison Gong.

Alleluia by Mark Schweizer (1956-2019) was our Introit for Easter Sunday, 4 April 2021. It was performed by Calvary’s Choral Scholars, Kylie Smith, soprano, Magdalena Travis, alto, David Kronenberg, tenor, and Zade Dardari, bass.

Alleluia, Amen by Thomas Norris (1741-1790); arranged by James Kirkby (b. 1949), was our Offertory Anthem for Easter Sunday, 4 April 2021. The trumpet was played by Genevieve Kromm, a recent graduate of the music school at University of California, Santa Cruz. Through the wonders of technology, she joined us from Austria.

This performance of Ave verum corpus by Canadian composer, Imant Raminsh (b. 1943), was recorded by Calvary Choir in 2006 in the Chapel of York School in Monterey, California. Here it is coupled with Eucharistic images from Calvary’s apse windows and carved altar front. It was the Offertory Anthem at the Maundy Thursday Eucharist.

Hail, true Body born of the Virgin Mary, who, truly suffering, was sacrificed on the cross for mankind, whose side was pierced, whence flowed blood and water: Be for us a foretaste of heaven during our final examining. O Jesus sweet, O Jesus pure, O Jesus sweet Son of Mary.

This setting of Crux Fidelis was composed by Calvary’s organist, Kylan deGhetaldi (b. 1983). It was sung at the close of our Maundy Thursday service as the sanctuary adornments were being removed in preparation for Good Friday.

Once I Ached for Thee is setting of a poem by Christina Rossetti (1830-1894). The music is by Robert Pearsall (1795-1856) and was likely one of his many secular part songs. The two were put together by Arlen Clarke (b. 1954) to create this beautiful and heart-rending anthem that was our Offertory on Palm/Passion Sunday, 28 March 2021.

A Wreath by Arlen Clarke (b. 1954), text by George Herbert (1593-1633), was the Offertory Anthem for 28 February 2021, the Second Sunday of Lent.

Purge me, O Lord by Thomas Tallis (c. 1505-1585) was the Offertory Anthem for Sunday, 21 February 2021, the First Sunday of Lent.

GinSing! is our annual fundraising event for our Choral Scholar Outreach Program. It was streamed live over Zoom for the first time this year, on Saturday the 13th of February 2021, and includes performances by our choral scholars, Calvary Choir, Kylan deGhetaldi, and Amy Mendon. The entire event is shown below; the actual performances begin at 9:35.

Panis angelicus by Cesar Franck was sung by Carol and Kymm Walker for a service in September 2020

This was our first effort at a video virtual choir offering, compiled for the 7th Sunday after Easter, 26 May 2020. The soprano soloist is Calvary Choral Scholar Kylie Smith; the trumpet player is UCSC grad student Genevieve Kromm. The pianist for “Let the Bright Seraphim” is Liz Roper; the pianist for “Let Their Celestial Concerts” is Kylan deGhetaldi.

This Offertory Anthem is actually two pieces. They are the two final movements of Handel’s oratorio, Samson(1743), which depicts Samson’s self-martyrdom and victory over the Philistines, and the victory of the Israelites’ God over Dagon, god of the Philistines. The first part of our anthem is a video of a live performance earlier this year by our soprano Choral Scholar, Kylie Smith, and UCSC grad student in trumpet and occasional visiting musician at Calvary, Genevieve Kromm, with pianist, Liz Roper. The second part of the anthem is the final chorus from Samson in a Calvary Virtual Choir video with Kylan deGhetaldi at the piano and Genevieve Kromm on trumpet.
